My understanding is that there is a decrease in amplitude AND area in conduction block, but why is there not supposed to be an increase in duration as well?

The criteria for definite Conduction Block is to have duration increase <30%.Increase in duration is due to differential conduction across nerve fibers and resultant phase cancellation results in low amplitudes.
